Launch events for new business ventures usually settle for a single pair of scissors and a short speech. OBS Global, a newly unveiled network pitching itself as a connector for international business, chose something more elaborate for its debut in Dubai this week: 103 delegates, each representing a different nationality, holding one continuous ribbon and cutting it at the same instant.
Royalty in the room
Among those taking part was Sheikh Abdulhakim Al Maktoum, whose presence lent the evening a level of official weight that a purely corporate gathering would not otherwise carry. His involvement in the group cutting was presented as central to the night rather than a ceremonial cameo, reinforcing the platform's pitch that it operates with access reaching into government and royal circles, not just the business world it says it wants to connect.
The claim worth a second look
Organizers billed the synchronized cut as a world record. It is the kind of claim that only means what it says once an outside body such as Guinness World Records has actually reviewed and certified it, something that had not happened as of the launch itself. Until independent confirmation arrives, it is more accurate to describe the moment as record-setting in the organizers' own telling rather than as an officially recognized record.
