A six-month tournament ban imposed on the Paichai High School baseball team has been cut to one month, clearing its senior players to compete again from this week.

The penalty followed a June 29 national tournament game against Gwangju Jeil High School, during which Paichai players chanted lines that referenced the 1980 Gwangju Uprising, the pro-democracy movement that ended with the military killing civilians in the city. The Korea Baseball Softball Association banned the Seoul team from national tournaments for six months on July 1 and stripped it of its remaining championship games.

## The reduction

The fairness subcommittee of the Korea Sport and Olympic Committee reduced the ban to one month on Monday, effective immediately. It did not dispute that the chants merited discipline. It pointed instead to two developments since the original ruling: the Paichai team travelled to Gwangju Jeil on July 6 to apologise in person, and the school it had targeted then asked for leniency on its behalf.

## What it changes

The practical effect is that Paichai can enter the Bonghwangdaegi National High School Baseball Tournament, which starts on August 6. For players in their final year that tournament is the last national competition available to them this season, and high school performance carries weight in college recruitment and professional drafts. A six-month ban would have closed that window entirely.

The decision leaves an uncomfortable balance in place. The conduct was judged serious enough to warrant a ban, and the reduction rests less on any reassessment of the chants than on the response of the school that was mocked.
