Herbalife Korea, the local arm of the nutrition company, has been recognised by the Great Place to Work Institute for its organisational culture, but the more useful part of the story is what prompted the work behind it.

A 2023 trust index survey of the company's own staff showed that employees at junior levels rated the workplace less positively than management wanted. Rather than treat the result as noise, the company used it as a starting point for change, which is the harder and less common response to an unflattering internal survey.

## What changed

Much of the effort went into communication across generations and departments. The general manager, Chung Seung-wook, began holding small group dinners with millennial employees, a way of making senior leadership more reachable than an open door policy that nobody uses. The company also set out a diversity, equity and inclusion policy built around hearing from different generations.

The benefits sit alongside the cultural work: exercise and counselling programmes for physical and mental health, English classes, birthday leave, a selective working hours system, educational support for employees' children and family friendly welfare schemes.

## The reasoning

Chung tied the effort back to the business. A culture where people enjoy their work while pursuing both personal development and health, he said, is the core of corporate competitiveness.

He said the company intends to keep building a sustainable culture centred on balanced lifestyles, in keeping with its role as a wellness focused business.
